Proceeds Support Local Community Groups
The Discovery Shoppe recognizes the continuing need for funding for local charities in our community. Our nonprofit organization donates profits from the shop's sales to local charities. In the Fall of 2024 they awarded over $135,707.00 to fifteen charities. Read below to learn more about how we have given back.

Charitable Awards From The Discovery Shoppe
Vietnam Veterans of America
Discovery Shoppe Volunteer, Cathy Bragdon, had the honor of presenting a check for $9.500 to Vietnam Veterans of America. Accepting the grant were Vietnam veterans Benny Gutierrez, John Herbert, Bob Mulholland, Warren Roll, and Jan Bratcher. The funds will be used to help bring the Traveling Vietnam Veterans Memorial and Museum to Chico. The ‘Wall That Heals’ is a half-size 250 ft. replica of the Memorial in Washington DC. The monumental wall has tremendous significance for 58,367 who died in the Vietnam War, and the 2.5 million service men and women that served in Vietnam with the support of their loved ones. ‘The Wall that Heals’ exhibit features a mobile Education Center and is erected in a Chevron-shape. It will be on display June 5 through 7 at the Chico Elks Lodge. Cathy also sponsored the Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 582 to receive the funds.
Butte County Sheriff's Mounted Posse
The Discovery Shoppe donated $10,000 to the BC Mounted Posse to be used to help purchase a Fentanyl detection canine to assist in the location and prevention of Fentanyl entering their jail. The Discovery Shoppe is very proud to be involved in Disco’s purchase!
City of Chico - Parks Division
The Discovery Shoppe volunteer, Marilyn Myrick, presented a check for $10,000 to Shane Romain, City of Chico, Parks Division. The funds will be used towards replacing the perimeter fencing of Caper Acres. The new fencing will be a wrought iron style that will contribute to the aesthetic of Caper Acres while providing safety and security. Leatha King, Discovery Shoppe volunteer, sponsored the Parks Division to receive the funds.
Youth For Change
Discovery Shoppe volunteer Carla Bee (Center) presented a check for $9,874 to Youth for Change CEO, Beth Parsons (Right), and Youth for Change Director of Social Services, Nancy Jorth (Left) to help our 6th street Center for Youth upgrade their commercial kitchen with a commercial dishwasher!

The 6th Street Center for Youth serves transition-aged youth, 14-24 years old, dealing with issues of homelessness or a runaway episode.

This dishwasher will free up precious staff time from washing dishes so they can provide better service to our youth!
Butte County Sheriff's Search and Rescue
The Discovery Shoppe recently donated $9,560 to the Butte County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue. Shoppe volunteer, Carole Southam presented the grant to Chris Milnes. The Search and Rescue will used the funds to purchase DJI Matrice MT30 Drone that will give their team additional capabilities with its extended flight time and nighttime thermal imaging capabilities. Additionally, the MT30 drone will allow their licensed drone pilots to fly during inclement weather periods. Carole volunteers as treasurer of the Discovery Shoppe and sponsored the BC Search and Rescue.
Habitat for Humanity, Butte County
Discovery Shoppe volunteer Jan Burnham, right, was happy to present a check for $10,000 to Nicole Bateman, Executive Director of the Habitat for Humanity of Butte County. Habitat for Humanity of BC has provided a path to affordable homeownership for over 53 families. They currently have two projects underway, Chico Boucher and the Habitat Rebuilds in Paradise projects. They will used the funds to help purchase a used tractor with trailer and attachments that would allow them to efficiently address weed and fire hazard abatement as well as complete the final grading and landscaping.
Shalom Free Clinic
Discovery Shoppe volunteer Candi Hughes (right) presented a check for $9,997 to Nancy Ferguson, representative of the Shalom Free Clinic. The clinic will use the funds to create starter kits for 98 new diabetic patients consisting of reliable monitoring systems, syringes and needles, sharps containers, alcohol swabs and blood pressure cuffs. By supporting this project, donors contribute to saving lives, preventing complications such as limb loss and promoting overall well-being among diabetic individuals. The Shalom Free Clinic gives access to diabetes care for underinsured and uninsured individuals.
North Valley Animal Disaster Group
Discovery Shoppe volunteer, Carol Burr, recently presented a check for $8,615 to Jan Reale, who represents the North Valley Animal Disaster Group. This group is dedicated to safeguarding our community and its animals during crisis. They will use the funds for outreach materials and educational events to provide individuals with the knowledge needed to effectively handle animal related emergencies.
Butte College Roadrunner Hub
Discovery Shoppe volunteer, Merry Peterson, was pleased to present a check for $9,992.55 to Carrie Soldate and Maisue Thao from the Butte College Roadrunner Hub. The Hub’s Basic Needs Resource Center serves over 14,000 students annually and an average of over 200 students daily with snacks, drinks and bags of food via their food pantry. These funds will be used to supply personal hygiene items to their pantry. If students can’t afford food, they can’t afford a toothbrush or soap!
